A 60-year-old resident of Maraimalai Nagar near Chengalpattu succumbed to COVID-19 while being shifted to Chennai’s Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital at midnight, marking the first fatality in Tamil Nadu amid an overall decline in weekly case numbers.

The patient, who had been undergoing treatment at KK Nagar ESI Hospital for other health issues, tested positive for COVID-19 before his condition deteriorated, as per a report on ABP Nadu. Officials confirmed that he passed away en route to the Chennai facility.

The incident comes just days after the state reported a significant dip in new COVID-19 infections with only three fresh cases recorded between May 19 and 26. According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 60 patients were discharged during the same period.
