Bryan Kohberger, 28, has been arrested in the Poconos on charges of first-degree murder in connection with the gruesome murder of four University of Idaho students last month, in a case that captured national attention.

Kohberger faces four counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. All were stabbed to death at a rental home near the campus in Moscow, Idaho, early on Nov. 13.

Kohberger, who was originally from the Poconos, was taken into custody early Friday at a home in the Indian Mountain Lakes development in Chestnuthill Township, Monroe County.

Officials have not yet revealed many details on the case or a possible motive, but here is what we know so far about Kohberger.

Kohberger holds a master’s and bachelor’s degree from DeSales University, according to Associate Vice President Carolyn Steigleman. He completed his master’s degree in criminal justice in June 2022 and his undergraduate studies in 2020.

Boyce Jubilan, associate professor and chair of DeSales University’s psychology program, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he was a research supervisor to Kohberger, and said he was “a little awkward with his peers” and “liked to work alone.”

He is listed as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Washington State University. The university is a short drive across the state line from Moscow, where the University of Idaho is located.

Prior to his time at DeSales, Kohberger graduated with an associate of arts degree in psychology in 2018, according to college spokesperson Mia Rossi-Marino.

A profile with his name on the website meritpages.com said he was a member of Psi Beta, a psychology studies honor society, and a “peer supporter” who was trained to provide mental health support to fellow students.

One person said on social media that he knew Kohberger and attended Monroe County Technical Institute with him for a few years before Kohberger left in 2014.

Lawrence Rosenberg said Kohberger knows a lot of people in the Poconos area and would get together with friends at Indian Mountain Lakes.

“He was always a strange person,” Rosenberg said.

According to a 2018 article by the Pocono Record, Kohberger was a security guard for the Pleasant Valley School District as recently as 2018.

Calls by The Morning Call to Pleasant Valley High School, which Kohberger reportedly attended, were not returned Friday.

Officials in Idaho at a news conference Friday afternoon offered few details about the case, saying they could not comment further until Kohberger’s extradition back to Idaho was complete.

Kohberger is being held at Monroe County Correctional Facility following an arraignment. He will be held there pending extradition to Idaho.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.
