Assam CM Accuses Rahul Gandhi Of ‘Duplicity’ Over Response To Court Verdicts In Modi Remark Cas

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday took a jibe at Rahul Gandhi accusing him of employing “double standards” over the Supreme Court’s order to stay the Congress leader’s conviction in a 2019 defamation case.

Taking to Twitter, CM Sarma said, “Heights of duplicity! You abuse the judiciary when you get convicted, and when the same judiciary grants you bail, you say justice has prevailed.” Sarma’s comment came after Rahul Gandhi was given relief by the apex court in the ‘Modi surname’ case on Friday.

The Supreme Court on Friday suspended Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a criminal defamation case over his remarks on the ‘Modi’ surname during an election campaign in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Gandhi was disqualified as an MP in March 2023 after being convicted by a Gujarat court in the defamation case.

Heights of duplicity!

You abuse the judiciary when you get convicted, and when the same judiciary grants you bail, you say justice has prevailed.

Speaking about the matter, BJP spokesperson Pramod Swamy Sarma told ABP Live, “When the Gujarat court verdict was against Rahul Gandhi, he said that it is against democracy, but when the Supreme Court gave a decision in favour of Gandhi, he termed it as a victory of democracy.”

“Recently, in the process of delimitation in Assam, the Election Commission released the draft and the Congress termed it to be decided by the BJP and RSS. If the decision of carrying out the delimitation process has been planned by the BJP, then democracy is in danger,” Swamy said.

This is not the first time that Chief Minister Himanta Sarma has come out heavily on the senior Congress leader. Chief Minister Sarma has been attacking Gandhi ever since he parted ways with the Congress to join the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2015. Both leaders often criticize each other either at public meetings or on social media platforms.

Earlier in March, when Rahul Gandhi was disqualified as an MP, Sarma had said that “Karma had caught up” with the Congress leader. He said that Rahul Gandhi should have apologised for his comments.

Last year, CM Sarma compared Gandhi’s beard to that of Saddam Hussein. “I did not say anything about his [Rahul Gandhi’s] look. I just said with time, your face has started looking the same as Saddam Hussein’s, but if you shave your beard you will start looking like Nehru,” he said.
