Following the transition of power in Maharashtra, the results of elections to 547 gram panchayats in 16 districts are being released on Monday. According to preliminary data, the BJP and Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena are leading, signalling that the ruling alliance is gaining support among rural voters.

Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar claimed that BJP had emerged as the single largest party.

“The results of the Gram Panchayat elections in Maharashtra are coming out, and so far, the BJP has emerged as the single largest party. I want to thank the people,” Shelar said.

“The preliminary results of the election show that the BJP has emerged as the single largest party in the state. NCP is at the second spot. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena faction is at the fourth position,” Shelar further said.

“The results make one thing clear that the issue raised by Eknath Shinde that NCP is destroying Shiv Sena is reflected in the elections,” he said.

Polling was held peacefully for 547 gram panchayats on Sunday. In terms of voting percentage, the Election Commission has reported that 76 per cent of eligible voters exercise dtheir franchise.

For the biggest number of gram panchayats—139 in Nandurbar district and 72 in Yavatmal district—votes have been cast in the election of members, including sarpanches. Votes were cast in the Dhule district for 33 gram panchayats, 13 in the Jalgaon district, 38 in the Junnar taluka of Pune, 18 in the Ambegaon taluka, 05 in the Khed taluka, and 2 in the dawn taluka.
