A two-vehicle crash that sent both into a former fast-food restaurant in Harvey stopped traffic at Sibley Boulevard and South Halsted Street for multiple hours Thursday while fire crews, police and city employees cleaned up the destruction in the road.

Crystal Richardson, the assistant superintendent of the Harvey Public Works Department, said the driver of an SUV lost control and rammed into another car with such force that both vehicles smashed into the abandoned fast-food restaurant on the southeast corner of the intersection.

A mangled Chrysler SUV sat on a tow truck across the street, its front hood completely mangled and its front axle bent. The front bumper of a second car was in the bushes, detached from the vehicle.

Crews worked to clean up the cinder blocks from the street while they ushered traffic away from the scene.

Harvey Police Department and Fire Department could not be reached for comment.
