Two men have been charged in the Feb. 24 fatal shooting of a man and woman in Waukegan, a crime Waukegan police described as “senseless” and “an absolute travesty.”
Tylo Eddins and Ishawn Pitts of Waukegan have been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Rodrigo Olivan and Ana Gill, both of Waukegan, authorities said.
Eddins, police said, fled Waukegan after the shootings and has been taken into custody in Killeen, Texas. Pitts was arrested late last week by Waukegan police.
The pair are charged with firing at Olivan and Gil, who were shot outside a residence in the 400 block of Powell Avenue. Olivan, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Gil, 24, died days later from complications of her gunshot wounds, authorities said.
“According to individuals with knowledge of this shooting, it occurred for no reason and was a senseless shooting of two people who had no ties to the suspects or any crimes,” Waukegan police said in a Monday news release. “This case is an absolute travesty.”
The shootings, according to police, were part of a spree that began earlier that day when Eddins carjacked an Uber driver in Chicago. Eddins reportedly drove the stolen 2020 Kia Sorrento to Waukegan, where he robbed someone at gunpoint in the 500 block of Genesee Street, according to reports.
Eddins then drove the stolen car to his home in Waukegan where he met Pitts, police said. They drove past the home on Powell Avenue and Eddins fired at Olivan and Gil, according to authorities.
Eddins, police said, told Pitts to “finish them off,” and Pitts fired multiple times at the victims.
The men then drove north, where they crashed the car into a fence in Zion. They fled, and police said they were eventually able to link the car to the shooting.
Eddins is awaiting extradition back to Illinois from Texas, police said.
