In a thrilling finale at the National Stadium in Karachi, Islamabad United emerged victorious by two wickets in the ninth edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) against Multan Sultans on March 18 (Monday). The match came down to the wire, with Hunain Shah hitting the last-ball boundary to secure the win for United, claiming their third PSL trophy.

Multan Sultans struggled with their batting in the first innings, with only four players reaching double figures, with Usman Khan top-scoring with 57 runs off 40 balls. However, Iftikhar Ahmed’s quickfire 32 off 20 deliveries, including three fours and as many sixes, boosted their total to a competitive 157 in their allotted overs.

The standout performer for Islamabad United was Imad Wasim, who delivered a remarkable bowling performance, taking five wickets for just 23 runs in his four overs, while also contributing as the team’s captain with three wickets.

Islamabad Clinch Last-Ball Thriller

Islamabad, the two-time champions, began their run-chase on a positive note but faced setbacks with wickets falling at regular intervals. Martin Guptill played a promising innings with a 32-ball 50 before getting run out. The situation became tense for Islamabad at 129-7 with the dismissal of Faheem Ashraf for just one run.

Naseem Shah and Imad Wasim took their team close to the target before Mohammad Ali dismissed Naseem Shah on the fifth ball of the final, leaving United needing just one run to win. However, Hunain Shah showed remarkable composure, skillfully guiding the ball between short third and backward point to seal the victory for his team.

Imad Wasim was awarded the Player of the Match for his outstanding performance in both innings. His five-wicket haul in the first innings was instrumental in restricting Multan Sultans to a manageable total. Additionally, his crucial contribution with the bat, scoring 19 runs off 17 deliveries, played a significant role in Islamabad United successfully chasing their target.

“Didn’t know that it would go on to be the best ever tournament. Just wanted to have an impact in the team’s win. It was a new experience – taking five wickets in the final. Took lesson that we should’ve finished it one over earlier. I’m happy playing cricket. Trying my utmost to contribute for the team. 4-5 years of cricket left in me,” said Imad Wasim after winning the award after the match.
