DuPage County Division of Transportation announce major road construction projects kicking off this year

“It’ll be a great place if they ever finish it,” the old O. Henry quote, jabbing at the seemingly endless construction around New York City, comes to mind every summer in Illinois; as construction crews come out of winter hibernation to fill some of the potholes expanded by the thawing and freezing of precipitation on roads’ surfaces.

This year, as part of its five-year Transportation Improvement Program, DuPage County approved seven new road construction projects, and major roadway resurfacing around the western suburbs.

The plan calls for 57 lane-miles of resurfacing costing $36.1 million in federal and county funds to maintain and improve the existing infrastructure including repaving the following 7 major roadways:

Finley Road from Butterfield Road to Ogden Avenue.
Medinah Road from Army Trail Road to Irving Park Road.
Swift Road from St. Charles Road to Collins Avenue.
St. Charles Road from Riford Road to IL 53.
Villa Avenue from Lake Street to North Avenue.
Warrenville Road from IL 53 to Finley Road.
Winfield Road from Warrenville Road to Diehl Road.

Plans also include the reconstruction of the Geneva Road bridge over the West Branch DuPage River, the Warrenville Road bridge over the East Branch DuPage River, York Road from Devon Avenue to north of Illinois Route 19/Irving Park Road, the reconstruction and widening of Fabyan Parkway in West Chicago west of Illinois Route 38/Roosevelt Road, and intersection improvements at 87th Street and Woodward Avenue, Lemont Road from 83rd Street to 87th Street and Naperville Road between Ridgeland Avenue and Interstate 88.

“Our goal for the annual Transportation Construction Program is to maintain or improve the safety and accessibility of our roads in a comprehensive and cost-effective manner,” Transportation Committee Chair Mary FitzGerald Ozog said in a news release Monday. “Our larger projects aim to reduce the congestion, ensure the state of good repair of our capital facilities, and improve the overall mobility for residents, workers, and visitors in DuPage County.”

In 2023 DuPage County dedicated more than $327 million in federal and county funds to be spent over five years for “road safety and congestion projects,” including $32 million for bridge repair $50 million on repavement, and the construction of a new highway maintenance facility, according to the news release.
