Fight at Schererville YMCA

An Illinois man faces charges for a fight at the Schererville YMCA on Sept. 7 after a “heated” basketball game.

Montrell L. Thomas, 19, of Sauk Village, is charged with battery resulting in serious bodily injury. He has not been apprehended and is ordered held without bond.

A charging affidavit alleges after the game, Thomas threw a cell phone at the victim’s face, who slapped Thomas’ arm away, before they got into a brief fight. Thomas knocked the victim down, hit and stomped his head.

Bond denied for man charged with hitting woman with gun

A judge declined to reduce a man’s bond Thursday who was charged with hitting his girlfriend with a gun and nearly avoiding a police standoff.

Joshua Lascola, 35, is charged with three counts of criminal confinement, three counts of domestic battery, one count of intimidation and two counts of criminal recklessness.

The victim testified Thursday that she didn’t want the criminal case to be filed. She said she would be willing to sell a car to help him post bond to leave jail.

His bond remains at $9,000 cash surety. A jury trial is scheduled in December.

Gary police responded Aug. 24 to the 3500 block of Burr Street in the city’s Black Oak section.

The woman fled to a neighbor’s house and told police that Lascola beat her, held her against her will and would get into a “shootout” with officers. She had a noticeable cut on her head and a bruised arm.

A few minutes after officers set up a perimeter, Lascola came out of the home on the 3600 block of Burr Street and was arrested without incident.

Hobart man charged in drunken fight

A Hobart man is charged with punching his lifelong friend during a night of drinking.

Uriel Segovia, 38, was charged Monday with aggravated battery, two counts of felony battery and one misdemeanor. His bail is set at $3,500 cash surety.

His next court date is Oct. 1.

Hobart Police responded around 2:21 p.m. to the 200 block of California Street.

Court records indicate Segovia punched the victim about three times on Sept. 21. They had been drinking that night and the victim tried to bait him with “past disputes” to goad him into fighting, according to the affidavit.

The victim could lose some vision in one eye, doctors said.
