Industrialist Anand Mahindra has praised Tarul Rayan, a Chennai-based PhD candidate who operates a food cart, in a post on social media. Rayan gained widespread attention after being featured in a viral video by an American vlogger during his visit to Chennai. The vlogger highlighted Rayan’s story and shared their interaction online.

“This clip went viral a while ago. An American vlogger discovers a PhD candidate running a food stall part-time. What struck me as truly special, however, was the end, when he picks up his phone, and the vlogger thinks he’s going to show him social media mentions of his stall—but instead, he proudly displays the research papers he has authored! Incredible. Unique. Indian,” Mahindra wrote in a post on X.

In the viral video, the vlogger asks, “Do you have chicken 65? How much for a plate?” Rayan responds, “100 grams for Rs 50.” The vlogger then orders the chicken and continues, “I found you on Google Maps. This is you, right?” Rayan confirms. When Rayan hands the chicken to the vlogger, he remarks, “Look at the beauty. Great-sized piece. This is spicy but also good.” Later, the vlogger inquires, “When did you open this place?” To which Rayan replies, “13 years ago. At that time, I was 16 years old. I am also studying; currently, I am pursuing a PhD in Biotechnology.”

The American vlogger expressed surprise and admiration, noting that, apart from being a scientist, Rayan is also a talented and well-known cook. Rayan added, “If you Google my name in Chrome, you will find my research paper.”

Netizens’ Reactions To Viral Video

The viral video attracted a variety of responses from netizens, reflecting mixed opinions about Rayan’s situation. One user commented, “No offence, but this is not a great video. It’s commendable that he’s working, but a PhD should utilise his skills in research, not just selling food. We’ve failed to provide him with an environment where he can truly apply his education.”

Another user appreciated Rayan’s story, stating, “This showcases the incredible resilience of Indians. A PhD candidate running a food stall part-time and proudly sharing his research instead of seeking social media praise speaks volumes about dedication. He truly embodies the spirit of hard work and excellence!”

A further comment highlighted, “That moment illustrates the real beauty of India—hard work, humility, and intelligence combined. Here is a person engaged in important research while also running a food stall with pride. It’s a reminder that success isn’t just about big titles, but about doing everything with passion. Incredible. Unique. Truly Indian.”
