A Hampshire man died Sunday afternoon after his crossover utility vehicle went off the road on Route 20 and struck a tree, a Kane County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Robert Skarbonkiewicz, 75, of the 200 block of East Jackson Avenue, was eastbound near Route 47 in unincorporated Rutland Township when the crash occurred about 12:35 p.m., officials said.

Sheriff’s deputies arrived to find Skarbonkiewicz’s 2017 Dodge Journey facing eastbound in a ditch with “significant visible damage,” according to the report. Skarbonkiewicz was unconscious and later was pronounced deceased at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin.

Skarbonkiewicz had been using a seatbelt at the time of the crash and his vehicle’s airbags deployed, officials said.

The crash remains under investigation by the Kane County Investigations Division.
