A cat and a bird died in a house fire in Aurora on Dec. 28, Aurora Fire Department officials said.

No residents were injured during the fire at a house on the 400 block of Superior Street, according to a press release from the fire department

Firefighters responded to the fire at approximately 7:36 p.m. Dec. 28, officials said.

The first-arriving units reported heavy fire on the front side of a 2½-story single-family home with a walk-up attic, according to the release. Crews initiated an aggressive interior attack, with engine companies addressing fire on the first floor before advancing to extinguish flames on the second and third floors, according to officials.

No residents were inside the home during the fire, according to the release.

The fire was brought under control within 24 minutes of the initial dispatch and was fully extinguished throughout the home in 90 minutes, officials said. Salvage and overhaul operations were completed to secure the property.

A man and four children were displaced due to the fire, officials said. A bird and a cat died in the fire, but a lizard was rescued alive, according to the release.

The house was deemed uninhabitable, officials said. The Red Cross and Victim Services responded to assist the displaced family in locating temporary accommodations.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the release.
