Robert Crimo III appeared briefly in Lake County Court Thursday as his trial in the 2022 Highland Park mass shooting continues moving toward a February trial.
Thursday’s case management hearing lasted less than five minutes, and the only issue discussed was whether to expand Crimo’s telephone freedoms. Judge Victoria Rossetti said she would allow Crimo continued phone privileges to talk to family, but declined a defense request to allow him to add a friend to the approved call list.
The judge set a Feb. 6 status hearing date, at which Lake County prosecutors and Crimo’s public defenders are expected to present the judge with a prospective questionnaire for potential jurors.
Crimo’s trial on first-degree murder and dozens of other felonies is scheduled to begin Feb. 24. He is accused of opening fire on the assembled crowd at the July 4, 2022 parade in Highland Park, killing seven and wounding dozens.
