Applications available for next Citizen Police Academy
The Naperville Police Department will accept applications through Friday, Jan. 31, for its spring Citizen Police Academy.
The 10-week program starts March 5. It runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesdays through May 7 at the Naperville Police Department, 1350 Aurora Ave.
Participants can learn about police operations, practices and objectives through lectures, interactive discussions and hands-on demonstrations, a news release said.
Topics include patrol, investigations, forensics and special response, among others.
“We pull back the curtain and we explain what we do, how we do it, and even let participants try their hands at it,” Police Chief Jason Arres said in a statement.
The free program is limited to 30 participants. Applicants must be 18 or older and live or work in Naperville. A criminal background check is done on each applicant.

Children’s museum to hold Community Cares event
DuPage Children’s Museum will host Community Cares, an event at which children and their families can give back to their community, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25.
The museum has partnered with several local organizations to provide activities to help the community, which fosters empathy, compassion and a sense of responsibility, officials said in a news release.
Families can make toys for shelter animals with the Naperville Public Library, create puzzles for nursing homes with Naper Settlement and prepare bird feeders with the Knoch Knolls Nature Center, among other activities. The museum also will be collecting unopened nonperishables and toiletries for a local food bank.
The activities are designed to help children understand the value of helping others and encourages lifelong habits of kindness and generosity, the release said.
The Community Cares Event also includes three performances by Black Moon Trio, its in-residence artist. The first show at 11 a.m. pairs storytelling with music and is inspired by the book, “The Great Lakes: Our Freshwater Treasure.”
Other performances will be held at 1 and 1:45 p.m.
Admission to the Naperville museum at 301 N. Washington St. is $19 for adults and children age 1 and older and $18 for seniors. Go to www.dupagechildrens.org/community-cares for tickets.
