Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday claimed that there was no incident of crime agaisnt women during the recently-concluded Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.

He also said that the foreign media “which criticises India” has also praised the Maha Kumbh Mela.

Addressing the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, the CM said the footfall at Maha Kumbh was more than expected and those who came and took the holy dip returned with a sense of overwhelm.

Not Even One Incident Of Harassment: UP CM

In his address, the Chief Minister said: “In 45 days of Maha Kumbh, more than 66 crore people from the country and the world visited the mela. Out of the 66 crore people who visited Maha Kumbh, half of them must have been women pilgrims, but there was not even one incident of harassment, loot, abduction or killing.”

“More than the expected number of people visited Maha Kumbh and those who came and took a holy dip returned with a sense of overwhelm. The international media also praised Prayagraj Maha Kumbh,” he added.

While CM Adityanath praised the organisation of Maha Kumbh in terms of women safety, there were reports in the media that claimed photos and videos of women bathing and changing clothes, allegedly at Maha Kumbh, were shared on social media and Telegram.

Following the reports, Uttar Pradesh police booked cases against social media accounts for posting such objectionable and explicit content, as per an India Today report.

Foreign Media Praise Maha Kumbh

Adityanath further said that foreign media which criticises India also praised Maha Kumbh.

“Often we see that foreign media makes negative comments about India. However, even the comments made by foreign media on Maha Kumbh… Wall Street Journal says ‘There was an event where more people gathered than the total population of Americans’; BBC says ‘Maha Kumbh was the largest gathering of humanity’; Express Tribune says ‘Maha Kumbh was the world’s largest religious ceremony’…,” he said.
