Mark Carney on Sunday won the race to become the leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party and is all set to succeed Justin Trudeau as the country’s next prime minister amid rising public dissatisfaction and a brewing trade war with United States.

The former central banker has been appointed to now lead the party in the upcoming general elections and represent Ottawa amidst challenges from US President Donald Trump.

Carney, 59, secured a decisive victory in the Liberal Party leadership race, winning almost 86 percent of the votes, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Nearly 1,52,000 leaders voted in the leadership contest within the Liberal Party, which was necessitated after Trudeau stepped down from his post in early January after facing internal party opposition and Freeland’s exit from the cabinet.

Carney has previously presented himself as the ideal counter to Trump’s disruptions, underlining his leadership in guiding the Bank of Canada through the financial crisis in 2008-2009 and helping the Bank of England emerge through the economic turbulence after the 2016 Brexit vote.

“There’s someone who’s trying to weaken our economy,” Carney said referring to Trump. “He’s attacking Canadian workers, families, and businesses. We can’t let him succeed.”

“He is attacking what we build. He is attacking what we sell. He is attacking how we earn our living,” Carney said at a final campaign event near Toronto on Friday, Reuters reported.

“We are facing the most serious crisis in our lifetime,” he further continued, adding that, “Everything in my life has prepared me for this moment.”
