Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday welcomed the passage of the Waqf Amendment Bill by the Parliament, calling it a “watershed moment”. He said the Bill would help those who have remained on the margins and are being denied both voice and opportunity.
“The passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill and the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill by both Houses of Parliament marks a watershed moment in our collective quest for socio-economic justice, transparency, and inclusive growth. This will particularly help those who have long remained on the margins, thus being denied both voice and opportunity,” he stated in a post on X.
PM Modi’s reaction came after the Rajya Sabha on Friday cleared the Waqf Bill with 128 members voting in favour of it while 95 members voted against the legislation. The Rajya Sabha held discussion on the Bill for around 12 hours.
