Eight individuals, including four minors, were arrested for reportedly raping a 13-year-old girl over several months in the Gyalshing district of Sikkim. The action was taken against the accused based on a complaint filed by the Child Welfare Committee on Friday after the school of the girl informed police about her condition.

Police told news agency PTI that the girl, who always remained sick and lowly in class, has informed that a woman from her vicinity always sought her help for the domestic work. Later, the woman reportedly compelled her into sexual acts, including with her husband.

Authorities further uncovered that two additional men had been involved, with the girl allegedly being coerced into sexual acts with them in exchange for money.

The survivor also identified four boys who had reportedly been involved in sexually assaulting her over the past year. Based on her testimony, police apprehended the woman, her husband, and the two men while the four minors were taken into custody.

The girl is currently under the care of the Child Welfare Committee, receiving medical attention and counseling.

A case has been filed under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, police confirmed, adding that the investigation is ongoing.

In a similar incident, nine persons have so far been apprehended in the case of gang-rape of a 19-year-old woman by 23 people over six days, a senior official stated on Wednesday (April 9). The woman was reportedly drugged and taken to several hotels by the accused.

Vidush Saxena, the Additional Commissioner of Police, Cantonment, stated that nine persons have been arrested so far in the case. “Police teams are conducting searches to nab the other accused and they will be arrested soon,” he said adding that the rape survivor is safe and police are in connection with her family members.

Meanwhile, the family members of the survivor refused to speak to the media. “Whatever information you want, you can talk to the police and take it from the police station,” the rape survivor’s mother said, news agency PTI reported.
