Colston Loveland signs 4-year contract with Chicago Bears, who also finalize deals with Day 3 draft picks

The Chicago Bears have signed first-round pick Colston Loveland to a four-year contract with a fifth-year option. The team also announced Thursday afternoon that it has finalized four-year deals with each of its four Day 3 draft picks — Ruben Hyppolite, Zah Frazier, Luke Newman and Kyle Monangai.

Loveland, the headliner of the Bears draft class, was taken at No. 10 last month with new coach Ben Johnson and general manager Ryan Poles valuing the tight end for his separation skills and versatility. As a junior at Michigan last fall, Loveland totaled 56 catches for 582 yards with five touchdowns.

He had surgery in January to repair the AC joint in his right shoulder, continues to recover from that injury and isn’t expected to be fully cleared until later in the summer. Still, the Bears remain optimistic Loveland will have an instant impact in the offense next season.

“He really creates headaches for a defense to go against,” Poles said last month. “(I) love his competes, his fire. This kid is physical, he’s tough and he plays the game the right way.

“When you watch the tape, there’s an energy level that comes with him. You can see it throughout the game and it’s infectious to other guys.”

The signings of Hyppolite, Frazier, Newman and Monangai come on the eve of the rookie camp, a three-day orientation that will be held this weekend at Halas Hall.

The Bears remaining unsigned draft picks are second-rounders Luther Burden III, Ozzy Trapillo and Shemar Turner. All are expected to participate in rookie camp.
