Unseasonal showers and fresh snowfall have brought a sudden chill across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, with more rainfall predicted over the coming days. The Meteorological (MeT) Department has issued an updated forecast, predicting fairly widespread showers in the region and advising residents to exercise caution.
Snowfall in Kashmir
Over the past few days, Kashmir has experienced significant rainfall, with snowfall reported in higher-altitude areas. This weather shift has led to a marked decline in both daytime and nighttime temperatures.
On Sunday, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 19.5°C, which is 7.5 degrees below the seasonal average. In Gulmarg, the popular ski destination, temperatures dipped to 7.6°C — a sharp 9.9 degrees below normal — following fresh snowfall in the surrounding mountains.
Pahalgam, another tourist hotspot, registered a cool 16.1°C, which is 6.9 degrees below usual. Even Jammu, typically known for its hot summer climate, saw a cooler-than-usual 35.5°C, which is 3.5 degrees below normal.
Rainfall prediction for Kashmir and Ladakh
According to the latest weather bulletin, the forecast for Tuesday, 3 June, is for “fairly widespread showers” (FWS).
On Tuesday, 4 June, another spell of light to moderate rain or thundershowers is expected at several places.
From 5 to 6 June, the weather is likely to remain mostly dry, though some areas might see brief rain or showers in the late afternoon.
The MeT Department has also warned of possible thunder, lightning, and gusty winds on the evening of 2 June.
People are advised to stay away from loose structure, electric poles, wires and old trees for safety.
