The executive director of the Gary Housing Authority is facing charges of strangulation and battery.

On Friday, Taryl Bonds, 52, was charged with two counts of strangulation, a Level 6 felony, and two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery.

Gary spokeswoman Erika Blackwell said the city was aware of the charges.

“The City of Gary holds all government officials to the highest standards of accountability,” Blackwell said. “Any domestic violence situation is unacceptable.”

It’s unclear what Bonds’ employment status is as he is not a direct employee of the City of Gary, Blackwell said.

She said the city will work with the Gary Housing Authority Board to ensure that essential housing services to residents continue without disruption.

Bonds has served as the GHA executive director since February 2021, after the troubled agency emerged from eight years of federal oversight. He’s also served as a South Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau board member since July 2021.
