A male motorcyclist was transported to a Chicago-area hospital Thursday afternoon after disregarding a traffic signal and striking an SUV in Liberty Township, police said.
Deputies with the Porter County Sheriff’s Department were called around 1:0 p.m. Sept. 11 to the intersection of U.S. 6 and North Calumet Avenue for a crash with injuries, according to a release from Sgt. Ben McFalls, the department’s public information officer.
The initial investigation shows a motorcycle being driven by a male driver was traveling westbound on U.S. 6 and disregarded the traffic signal at the intersection of North Calumet, colliding with a sport utility vehicle, according to the release.
The SUV was being driven by a female driver and was traveling south on North Calumet Avenue and beginning to turn eastbound on U.S. 6 when it collided with the motorcycle.
The male motorcyclist was flown to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn via Lutheran Air and is in critical condition but stable, McFalls said. The female driver was not injured.
“Please keep the friends and family of the motorcyclist in your thoughts and prayers,” McFalls said in the release.
The intersection was closed for almost three hours after the crash. The Porter County Reconstruction Team is investigating.
