Sunday is the night for television with the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, live from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater.
Seth Rogen earned the first Emmy of the evening — and his first Emmy ever — for his star turn in “The Studio,” while seasoned winner Jean Smart took home her fourth trophy in the same category for leading HBO’s “Hacks.” It marks her seventh Emmy win, her second for playing Deborah Vance.
Nate Bargatze played host, vowing to avoid politics during the annual award show, despite the recent killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Instead, he promised $100,000 to the Boys & Girls Club of America, the voluntary youth development organization focused on after-school program.
“I know how hard you guys have all worked to get here. I’m not trying to take anything away; 45 seconds, that’s what you got,” Bargatze said, warning that he will deduct funds should winner exceed the time limit. “And if you want to do more than that, do it on social media later. More people are going to see it there anyway.”
“Severance” has earned 27 nods, making it the most most nominated show of the night. Trammel Tilman, who cemented his Mr. Milchek as a fan favorite in the latest season, took home the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, becoming the first Black man ever to win in the category.
The Apple TV hit also earned recognition in categories including Outstanding Drama Series, Lead Actor and Actress in a Drama Series as well as Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. It’s a tight race though. The Adam Scott-lead workplace thriller is facing no shortage of challengers, chief among them HBO’s “The Pitt.” The medical drama’s star, Noah Wylie, who was last nominated in 1999 for “ER,” is also up for Best Actor in a Drama alongside Scott as is Sterling K. Brown for “Paradise,” Gary Oldman for “Slow Horses” and Pedro Pascal for “The Last of Us.”
“The Penguin,” a gritty Batman villain origin story starring Colin Farrell and the dazzling Cristin Milioti as his rival, trails close behind with 24 nominations. Its followed by the third season of HBO’s dark comedy, “White Lotus” — which earned nominations for most of its ensemble cast, including Parker Posey, Aimee Lou Wood, Carrie Coon, Natasha Rothwell, Jason Isaac and Walter Goggins. It boasts 23 nominations.
The night’s youngest nominee is Owen Cooper, who is just 15 years old. He was recognized for his star turn in the limited series “Adolescence,” which also makes him the youngest performer to be nominated in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series/Movie to date. The Netflix show is also up for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series
Rogen’s “The Studio,” meanwhile, is the front-runner in the Comedy category with 23 nods, including best comedy series. The series is also nominated for best lead actress, supporting actor and supporting actress in a comedy series.
“The Bear,” a recurring winner in recent years, earned a nomination for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as nods for its lead actor, Jeremy Allen White — who took home the trophy last year — and for Ayo Edebiri, who earned a lead actress nomination in addition to her first for best director. “Hacks,” starring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbender, is also up for several awards in the comedy category as is “Abbott Elementary.”
