Gary police are investigating the shooting death of a 9-year-old boy on Saturday.

City spokesman Steve Segura said the investigation was ongoing and charges haven’t been filed at this time. “They believe it was something that happened in the home,” he said. “Once they have charges we’ll release a statement.”

The Lake County coroner’s office identified the boy as Adrian Brown. The coroner’s office said an autopsy showed he died from gunshot wounds and labeled the death as a homicide.

The coroner’s office was called to Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus in Gary after Brown was pronounced dead at 7:16 p.m. in the emergency room.

Authorities said the shooting happened in the 400 block of Madison Street. Family members made a positive identification at the hospital.

A spokeswoman for the Gary Community School Corp. said the boy attended the Glen Park Academy on the city’s south side.
