Kannauj News: A 30-year-old woman was tonsured and assaulted by her relatives in the Chhibramau area of Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj after she accused her nephew of molestation. A purported video of the incident, which reportedly took place on September 3, went viral on social media, following which police took cognizance of the matter and arrested six people, including the woman’s husband.

In the video, the victim–with her head shaved and hands and legs tied– can be seen sitting on a log of wood, while her husband hits her repeatedly on her thighs and back with a wooden stick in front of a small crowd. The woman, who was in a semi-undressed condition, can be seen wincing in pain and crying before collapsing, but the onlookers do not intervene.

According to media reports, the woman was being subjected to harassment by her nephew, Raja Nath, who lives nearby. She endured the molestation for several days, and when she finally mustered the courage to complain about him to his family, she faced violent retaliation. They forcefully shaved her head and physically assaulted her.

Meanwhile, police have filed a case into the matter and a probe is underway. According to Kannauj Superintendent of Police, Amit Kumar Anand police have filed a case under Section Vishnu of the relevant laws.

“A video showing the assault of a woman is being circulated. It should be noted that under Section Vishnu of the relevant laws, a complaint was received on September 3, 2014, in which it was mentioned that a nephew had cut the hair of a relative. A case was immediately registered for that incident. The video shows that the man involved is the woman’s husband. Six people from the same family have been arrested and sent to jail.
