Her life and devotion to Lord Vishnu continues to inspire millions of devotees across the world. Who Was Andal Devi?

According to Hindu legends, Andal was found in the temple town of Srivilliputhur in Tamil Nadu. It is believed that she was found by Periyalvar, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, under a Tulsi plant in the temple garden. Seeing this as a divine blessing, he adopted her and raised her with love and devotion. From a very young age, Andal displayed an unshakable bond with Lord Vishnu. Her days were filled with prayers, singing hymns, and weaving garlands, dreaming of the day she would become His bride.

The Tale Of Her Strong Devotion

As Andal grew up, her devotion only deepened. Every morning, she secretly wore flower garlands that she prepared for Lord Vishnu before offering them at the temple. It was an act of innocent love that shocked her father when he got to know about it. That very night, the Lord appeared to Periyallvar is a dream, saying, He preferred the garlands worn by Andal because they carried her pure love. From that day, the garlands touched by Andal became a part of the temple ritual. This moment earned her the title “Soodi Kodutha Sudarkodi,” the radiant girl who offered worn garlands.

Her compositions, Thiruppavai and Nachiyar Thirumozhi, are still revered and recited by Vaishnavites across India. Thiruppavai consists of 30 verses sung during the Tamil month of Margazhi, guiding devotees on the path of surrender and devotion. Nachiyar Thirumozhi is a deeply emotional collection that reflects Andal’s yearning for spiritual union with the Lord.

The Sacred Union And Why Aadi Pooram Is Celebrated

The legends conclude that Andal’s devotion was so intense that Lord Ranganath, a form of Vishnu, accepted her as His bride. On the day of Aadi Pooram, Andal is believed to have merged with the deity at the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy temple.

This day is celebrated as the birth anniversary and as the divine wedding, making it one of the most significant festivals of Vaishnavites. Women observe pujas and pray on this day, seeking Andal’s blessings for a life that’s filled with love, devotion, and marital bliss.

Aadi Pooram is more than just a festival. It is a celebration of devotion, purity, and the unbreakable connection between Andal Devi and Lord Vishnu.
