The Defence Ministry said it successfully carried out a training launch of short-range ballistic missile ‘Agni-1’ from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha on Thursday. The training launch was carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, successfully validating all operational and technical parameters, the ministry said in its statement.

The defence ministry in its statement on Thursday said, “Training launch of Short-Range Ballistic Missile ‘Agni-1’ was carried out successfully from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha on December 07, 2023. Agni-1 is a proven very high precision missile system. The user training launch, carried out under the aegis of the Strategic Forces Command, successfully validated all operational and technical parameters.”

In June this year, the training launch of Medium-Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-1 was successfully carried out from Odisha’s APJ Abdul Kalam Island.

“A successful training launch of a medium-range ballistic missile, Agni-1, was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha, on June 1,” said the ministry in its statement.

”The missile is a proven system, capable of striking targets with a very high degree of precision. The user training launch successfully validated all operational and technical parameters of the missile,” the statement further read.

Several variants of the Agni series of missiles have been launched by India in the past. A nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-V, having a strike range of 5,000 km was successfully test-fired in December last year.

The Agni 1 to 4 missiles, which are already deployed, have ranges varying between 700 km to 3,500 km.
