Art Moderne-style home in Beverly designed by architect Albert Heino listed for $545,000

A three-bedroom Art Moderne-style house in the South Side Beverly neighborhood that was designed by architect Albert F. Heino was listed on Thursday for $545,000.

Heino (1905-1955) was the chief architect for United Airlines until leaving in 1948 to form his own practice. He is known for having designed the now-demolished Luther High School South in the Southwest Side Ashburn neighborhood, which opened its doors in 1953.

Heino also designed numerous churches in the city and suburbs, including a Lutheran church at 6099 N. Northcott Ave. in the Northwest Side Norwood Park neighborhood, the church that now is Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in the Southwest Side Auburn Gresham neighborhood, the three-story classroom building that is part of New Deliverance Church in the South Side Roseland neighborhood, the church that now is the Iglesia de la Santa Cruz in the Southwest Side West Lawn neighborhood, the church that now is the Iglesia de Dios Septimo Dia in the Southwest Side Morgan Park neighborhood, St. John’s Lutheran Church in La Grange and St. John the Evangelist Church in Flossmoor, among others.

The Beverly house was built for William J. Mathis in 1937 and has two bathrooms, hardwood floors throughout both levels, a full basement with an original bar, a kitchen with 42-inch cabinetry throughout, and a living room with a fireplace that is topped by a large mirror. Some of its most noteworthy features are its corner windows, which are very much hallmarks of its architectural style, which can be interchangeably described as Art Moderne or Streamline Moderne.

“This house has a feature that I don’t see too often, which is corner windows in most rooms. These windows let in lots of light,” listing agent Scott Powers of Century 21 S.G.R. told Elite Street. “The second-floor flat roof has the potential for a roof deck, too. This house is preserved so well, and it’s just a great neighborhood that is unique from door to door, and (this is) one of those unique homes.”

The current owners paid $190,000 for the house in 1994.

The house had a $6,569 property tax bill in the 2022 tax year.
