Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik Invited by WFI For National Trials: Report

Wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik have been invited by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to come for the national trials, keeping in mind the upcoming continental championshipsand evntually, the Olympic games in Paris 2024. The trials are set to be held on March 10-11 in New Delhi. As reported by the PTI, the wrestler have been sent an official invite by the apex institution for the sport on Monday, February 26.

Speaking of the invite, the invite was sent by the WFI President Sanjay Singh, who was recently appointed as the President via the election process and he was quoted saying the following, as reported by PTI.

“I would like to inform all affiliated units of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) that the selection trials to select the teams for participation in the following events are being conducted on 10th and 11th March 2024 at K.D. Jadhav Wrestling Indoor Stadium, IGI Sports Complex, New Delhi,” said Sanjay Singh, President (WFI).

The trial process will be initially in concern with the upcoming Senior Asian Wrestling Championship (April 11 – April 16), and the Asian Olympic Games Qualifier Tournament (April 19 – April 21), both in the in state of Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan.

“All state units are requested to intimate the wrestlers as per list attached to participate in the said trials,” Sanjay Singh added.

The infamous fight between the wrestlers and the association have been going on for a while and it has seen various adversities took place, such as the actions taken on wrestlers by police who were protesting. Also, due to delay of actions on Brij Bhushan Singh, Indian wrestling became a subject of controversy worldwide and after many issues and situations, the WFI got banned by the United World Wrestling (UWW), who have now lifted the suspension.
