Buffalo Grove Fire Department Chief Mike Baker is set to retire this summer, capping 45 years in the fire service industry, officials announced in a news release.

Baker’s last day on the job is set for July 14, then the next day, Deputy Chief Lawrence “Larry” Kane will take over as the successor, taking the reins the next day.

“Chief Baker is second to none in the fire service. His career has been characterized by a relentless pursuit of excellence and dedication to enhancing emergency medical services,” Village Manager Dane Bragg stated in the release.

With 34 years of service already under his belt, Baker joined the Buffalo Grove Fire Department as deputy chief in 2013 and was promoted to chief and emergency management agency director in 2015, the release states.

“I am immensely thankful for the support, camaraderie and opportunities for growth that I have experienced during my time here in Buffalo Grove,” Baker stated in the release.

After Baker’s professional journey began as a firefighter/paramedic with the Hanover Park Fire Department in 1979, he became a firefighter/paramedic at the Elgin Fire Department in 1985 and rose to interim fire chief, a position he held from 2011 to 2012 before coming to Buffalo Grove, according to the release.

“I especially want to extend my deepest gratitude to the residents of Buffalo Grove, as their support and trust is the foundation upon which we provide the highest level of medical, suppression and prevention services,” Baker stated in the release.

Baker’s career achievements include a pivotal role in directing municipal emergency medical services, overseeing personnel issues and labor negotiations, and coordinating fire prevention bureau activities, the release states.

“Working for such a wonderful community has been the high point of my fire service career and I will be forever grateful,” Baker stated in the release.

Officials noted in the release that Kane’s collaborative approach, coupled with what is described as a “steadfast commitment to fostering a culture of excellence,” has earned him the respect and admiration of his peers.

“I’m grateful for Chief Baker’s guidance and invaluable contributions to the department, and I’m grateful to Village Board, staff and firefighters for your trust and support,” Kane stated in the release.

After beginning his career as a police officer and later joining the Glenview Fire Department in 2001, Kane became deputy chief of the Buffalo Grove Fire Department in 2022, the release states. He said he is “honored” to be named the next fire chief.

According to the release, Kane will lead initiatives including the upcoming Fire Station 25 rebuild while simultaneously planning for other facility improvements required to modernize equipment and operations.

“As we look ahead to the next generation of fire suppression/prevention and emergency medical services, there is no one better suited than Deputy Chief Kane to lead the department and meet the evolving needs of the community,” Bragg stated in the release.

The leadership transition comes as work has been underway to prepare for emerging fire and emergency medical services in Buffalo Grove, the release states.

Officials noted in the release that in March 2023, the Buffalo Grove Fire Department became one of just 11 in Illinois to earn international accreditation, ensuring operations are best prepared for risks and challenges of the future.

“Chief Baker leaves behind a remarkable legacy by his unwavering commitment to public safety and commendable accomplishments throughout his career,” Village President Eric Smith stated in the release.
