A 14-year-old boy was charged in a fatal shooting in March in the South Loop neighborhood that killed a 17-year-old boy and wounded a 15-year-old, police said.

The boy, whose name was not released due to his age, was arrested Monday in the 100 block of South Central Park Avenue after he was identified as the person who fatally wounded Jeremy L. Smith, 17, during a teen take over in the South Loop, officials said.

Another boy, 15, also was injured in the shooting.

The 14-year-old boy was charged as a juvenile with first-degree murder, attempt murder and aggravated battery discharge of a weapon, Chicago police said.

The charges stem from a March 2 shooting in the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road.

Officers were near the 500 block of West Roosevelt Road around 8:06 p.m. when shots were fired. Police discovered the two teens in the parking lot of a bank with gunshot wounds, authorities said.

Officers performed life-saving measures at the scene. Smith  was taken to Stroger Hospital with gunshot wounds to the chest and neck where he was later pronounced dead.
