HICKORY, NC — The Putt-Putt Fun Center in Hickory played host to a riveting spectacle during the Hickory Christmas Classic Tournament, where Valdese’s Bryan Deal emerged as the champion in a breathtaking come-from-behind victory. The tournament, spanning three rounds and 54 holes on the renowned course one, showcased Deal’s exceptional skills and marked a surprising turn of events in the world of competitive putting.
As the tournament unfolded, Pro Mini Golf Hall of Famer and PPA player Greg Newport, renowned for his perfect 18 in Putt-Putt tournament history, seized an early lead in the first round. However, a mere three strokes behind were contenders like reigning (APA) N.C. State Champion Richard Miller and newcomer Gavin Hoke from Hickory. Valdese’s Bryan Deal found himself in the top six, setting the stage for an unpredictable competition.
Deal’s exceptional comeback unfolded during the second round, where he recorded the lowest score of the day with an impressive 23. This stellar performance not only closed the gap between him and the leader but positioned him ahead of Miller and other fierce competitors. Heading into the third and final round, Newport maintained control of the lead, with Deal trailing closely by just one stroke.
In a thrilling conclusion, Deal continued his impressive streak, securing the second-lowest round of the day with a score of 24. This achievement awarded him the lowest consecutive rounds of the tournament, ultimately securing a first-place finish. Deal edged out Miller by two strokes, claiming the runner-up position, while Newport finished in third place, trailing by five strokes.
Bryan Deal’s victory marks a significant milestone in his first full season of competitive Putt-Putt, adding another accolade to his growing resume. Notably, Deal is the current co-holder of the Best Ball single-round tournament record in Hickory, sharing the honor with teammate Miller. Additionally, he earned the title of the 2023 Hickory City Best Ball Champion, alongside Miller, and secured the runner-up spot for Best Ball Player of the Year with the second-most tournament wins in 2023.
