State’s top trooper for 2023 named

The recipient of the 2023 Indiana State Police Trooper of the Year is Trooper Dennis L. Griffin, according to a release.

Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter made the announcement. The honor is bestowed upon a trooper who exemplifies the department’s lofty standards and expectations as related to the overall mission, the release said. Griffin is also the 2023 Trooper of the District for the
Lowell Post.

Griffin is a Field Training Officer (FTO), a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), Recruiting Liaison, and is an instructor for Standardized Field Sobriety Tests (SFST’s) and Emergency Vehicle Operation (EVO), the release said. In 2023, Griffin had 1,801 traffic contacts, 114 criminal arrests, 111 OWI arrests, investigated 79 crashes and 455 police service contacts with motorists.

Griffin is a five-year veteran of the Indiana State Police. He resides in Jasper County with his family.

Northwest Health uses AI technology to diagnose strokes

Northwest Health announced the implementation of new artificial intelligence (AI) technology aimed at enhancing the speed and accuracy of stroke diagnosis at all three of its hospitals, according to a release.

With the integration of AI technology into its diagnostic process, Northwest Health may improve stroke care by significantly reducing the time it takes to diagnose a stroke and enabling more confident treatment decisions, the release said.

The AI system uses advanced algorithms based on medical data to analyze imaging scans, such as CT and CT angiograms, and quickly identify signs of stroke. By rapidly detecting subtle indicators, the technology empowers healthcare providers to make more accurate diagnoses and promptly initiate appropriate treatment protocols, the release said.

Portage fire officials tour solar panel facility

Fronius USA recently hosted Portage Fire Department officials for a tour of the solar panel roof and solar inverter lab for fire safety training on solar power equipment, according to a release.
The Solar Solutions Management team at Fronius USA in Portage provided technical training on PV systems, which consisted of rapid shutdown procedures and safety features for solar systems, as well as energy storage and electric vehicle chargers, the release said.

Edgewater to present inaugural Circle of Excellence award

Roosevelt Haywood III, President/CEO of Haywood and Fleming Associates, will be recognized June 1 as the inaugural recipient of the Circle of Excellence award from Edgewater Health, according to a release.

Edgewater Health, with 10 locations, will host a gala June 1 celebrating 50 years in healthcare at Duneland Falls Banquet and Meeting Center in Chesterton.

Haywood and Fleming Associates (HFA), established in 1984, is a risk management firm with expertise in commercial insurance and employee benefits, the release said.

Haywood has been involved with organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana, the Gary Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Northwest Indiana and the Indiana University Neal-Marshall Alumni Club, the release said.

Boys & Girls Clubs welcomes new vice president for philanthropy

Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana has named Denise Koebcke as its new Vice President of Philanthropy, according to a release.

Koebcke, who will start in her new role May 1, comes to the Clubs with years of experience in youth development and nonprofit leadership. She currently serves as the president and CEO of The Caring Place Inc., the release said.

She was previously honored with several community impact awards including the Prevent Child Abuse Hero for Children Award, the Porter Starke Services Foundation Community Impact Award and the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce Celebrating Our Everyday Heroes Award.
