Elgin firefighters were able to rescue a cat trapped in a house fire that resulted in more than $200,000 in damage, officials said.
Crews arrived at the single-family home in the 600 block of Ludlow Avenue about 5:15 p.m. Monday to find heavy black smoke coming from the first and second floors, according to an Elgin Fire Department news release.
Firefighters worked for about an hour get the blaze under control, and were able to free a cat that was in the basement, the report said. No injuries were reported but house sustained “significant fire and smoke damage,” officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
In the wake of the blaze, Elgin Fire Chief Robert Cagann issued a statement urging residents to make sure they have functioning smoke detectors and an emergency escape plan in the event of a fire.
