The Mumbai Police on Sunday morning said that they have arrested a man from Thane who is accused for allegedly attacking actor Saif Ali Khan’s at the latter’s residence in Mumbai.

As per the details shared by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dixit Gedam, the intruder is identified as Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad and is likely to be a Bangladeshi national.

However, identifying and catching the suspect was not an easy job for the state police. In order to trace the accused, the police had formed 30 police teams and scanned hundreds of CCTV footages to track down the 30-year-old Shariful Islam.

The police, while reviewing the CCTV footages of the building in Bandra where the actor was attacked by the intruder, found out the suspect leaving the building after attacking Saif Ali Khan. Later, they found a footage captured by a CCTV camera in DN Nagar in Andheri, a report from NDTV stated. The police saw suspect getting off the bike and using the cue of the bike’s registration number, they identified the accused using facial recognisation technology. During the investigation, the police found that the accused had been seen outside Dadar railway station thrice and had gone to Worli Koliwada.

The CCTV footage also revealed that the attacker had visited a labour contractor in the area. As per the details, the labour contractor gave the police all the details about the attacker, and based on his direction the police traced the accused to a labour camp in a forested area in Thane, from where he was arrested, as reported by Deccan Herald.

According to NDTV, a police officer said that Shariful claimed that he did not know that he was breaking into Saif Ali Khan’s home. The accused, while narrating the details of how he got into the building, said that he used the rear staircase and air-conditioning ducts to get inside.

Currently, Saif Ali Khan is recovering, after undergoing an emergency surgery at the Lilavati Hospital. He may be discharged soon, doctors said.
