Chicago White Sox starter Mike Clevinger will undergo disk replacement surgery on his neck Thursday and miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Saturday.
Clevinger is 0-3 with a 6.75 ERA in four starts this season. He went on the injured list with right elbow inflammation on May 25 and has been out since.
The right-hander went 9-9 with a 3.77 ERA in 24 starts with the Sox last season. He returned to the team on a one-year, $3 million deal announced on April 4.
The team also announced two roster moves before Saturday’s game against the Seattle Mariners at Guaranteed Rate Field, recalling pitcher Davis Martin from Triple-A Charlotte and optioning reliever Sammy Peralta to Charlotte.
Martin underwent Tommy John surgery in May 2023. He had a 3-6 record with a 4.83 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 14 appearances (nine starts) for the Sox in 2022.
Martin has thrown 7 2/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in two starts with Charlotte since being reinstated from the minor-league 60-day IL on July 12. He also appeared in five injury rehabilitation games between the Arizona Complex League White Sox and Class A Winston-Salem.
Peralta has a 3.00 ERA with one hold and four strikeouts in four relief appearances during two stints with the Sox this season.
