Construction to impact north Metra lines through September

A major tie replacement project by the Union Pacific Railroad began on Aug. 14 and is expected to impact Metra transit through mid-September.

According to a news release from Metra, about 3,000 ties on rail lines between Highland Park and Wilmette are expected to be replaced. Work will be completed overnight from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. to lessen the impact on Metra riders who should expect minor delays during evening rides when trains pass through work zones. Those living near the tracks will experience increased noise from work and train horns during construction. Horns are required by federal law when trains enter work zones said the news release.

“Tie replacement is essential and must be done at regular intervals to maintain track speeds and service levels,” said Metra Executive Director and CEO Jim Derwinski in the news release. “We understand that track work during overnight hours will affect the communities in the work zone, but working when fewer trains are running will enable the UP to minimize the impact by allowing the work to be accomplished more quickly.”

Any changes to train schedules and construction will be posted on Metra’s website.
