A convicted felon has been charged with unlawful gun possession after Naperville police found several loaded firearms in his car, including one with a 50-round drum magazine and another converted into an automatic weapon, officials said.
Marcus Carroll, 30, of Calumet City, was pulled over on a traffic stop about 2 a.m. Saturday at Aurora Avenue and South Route 59 after police spotted a handgun inside his car while it had been parked, a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and Naperville Police Department said.
Officers recovered the Glock 43 9mm gun with a 50-round drum magazine they’d initially seen on the floorboard behind the front passenger seat. The weapon had been moved to beneath the driver’s seat, where it was “uncased, loaded and immediately accessible,” the release said.
During a search of the vehicle, police also found a backpack containing a Glock 23 .40-caliber gun with a switch rendering it fully automatic, a Springfield Hellcat 9mm gun and a Glock 19 9mm gun. All four weapons were loaded with one round in the chamber, the release said.
Carroll was charged with one count each of unlawful possession of a weapon by a repeat felony offender, a class X felony, and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, a class 2 felony.
DuPage County Associate Judge Christine Cody granted the prosecution’s motion that Carroll be held at the county jail pending trial, the release said. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 23.
“With a history of multiple felony convictions, including armed robbery with a firearm and vehicular hijacking, Mr. Carroll is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm,” State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.
“The allegation that he was in possession of four loaded weapons, one with a 50-round drum and another that had been modified to allow it to fire fully automatic, are extremely troubling,” he said.
