Several dairy cows escaped from a Crown Point farm early Tuesday but not all survived.
Crown Point Fire Rescue was called to the area of Mississippi Parkway and U.S. 231 at 3:11 a.m. where seven cows were injured, some of which suffered fatal injuries when struck by a car, a city of Crown Point news release stated.
Although the Ford sedan involved in the incident was a total loss, the driver refused to be transported for medical treatment.
Crown Point Fire Rescue cleaned debris and helped the farmer herd the remaining animals back home. Crews also helped the farmer remove the deceased and injured cows from the roadway.
A city spokesperson also confirmed that the farmer arrived on the scene quickly to address the welfare of the animals and get them home safely.
The animals belonged to EJ Hein, owner of Hein Farms Inc., 2009 E. 121st St. It’s unknown how the cows escaped from the farm or how many perished, nor how so many cows were injured in the incident. Hein was unable to be reached for comment.
‘Snow’ the white deer perishes
“Snow,” a well-known white deer known to frequent the Crown Point area, was hit by a car Tuesday and suffered a broken leg. However, the deer was unable to be saved and had to be euthanized, according to a spokesperson for the city of Crown Point.
Veterinarian Kate Hodson donated her time, medications, trailer and portable X-ray, and Jasper County Animal Control assisted with equipment to try to help save Snow.
