Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson bought Theo Epstein’s mansion

Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson and his wife, Chicago Red Stars forward Mallory Swanson, in late August were the buyers who paid $3.5 million to buy a six-bedroom Lakeview mansion from former Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein.

A Georgia native who previously played for the Atlanta Braves, Dansby Swanson, 29, has been a key part of the Cubs’ success this season. He signed a seven-year, $177 million contract with the team in December, which was the same month that the couple married. Mallory Swanson, 25, has been with the Red Stars since 2021.

In Lakeview, sources confirmed to Elite Street that the Swansons were the buyers who, through a trust, purchased the 7,000-square-foot brick and limestone mansion from Epstein and his wife, Marie. Epstein is now a Connecticut-based consultant for Major League Baseball, and he and his wife last year paid $11.9 million for a six-bedroom, 8,155-square-foot mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut.

The Swansons continue the Lakeview home’s long-standing tradition of drawing the interest of top performers in Chicago sports. The Epsteins bought the house new from its builder in late 2011 for $3.25 million, and in so doing, they outbid then-Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Sharp for the mansion. Sharp later bought another mansion nearby for $2.95 million, and he sold that home in 2021.

Situated on an extra-wide, 37.5-foot lot, the mansion that the Swansons bought from the Epsteins has five full bathrooms, two half-bathrooms, millwork and built-ins throughout, high ceilings, a living room with a custom limestone fireplace, a curved staircase with a skylight above, and a kitchen with a marble island, a walk-in pantry and commercial-grade appliances, including an espresso machine, two dishwashers and a separate beverage refrigerator.

Other features include a great room with high ceilings, a walkout patio and a primary bedroom suite with floor-to-ceiling windows, a fireplace, two walk-in closets, a wet bar and a marble bathroom with separate vanities, a steam shower and a separate soaking tub. The mansion also has a great room, an attached four-car garage with a rooftop deck and a lower level with radiant heat, a theater room, an oversized bar and an additional rec room with built-ins.

Katie Shukis of Compass represented the Swansons. She declined to comment on the deal. Listing agent Jeffrey Lowe of Compass represented the Epsteins and also declined to comment.

The mansion had a $46,320 property tax bill in the 2021 tax year.

Meanwhile, the Swansons continue to own a five-bedroom, 4,529-square-foot house on a 1.3-acre lot in Sandy Springs, Georgia, which Dansby Swanson purchased as a single man in November 2020 for $1.63 million.
