Carpentersville hosting Mental Health Awareness Month events in May
Carpentersville will mark Mental Health Awareness Month with two events in May.
The Family Service Association of Elgin is hosting a children’s 100-meter dash at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, followed by 5K run and walk at 10 a.m. in Raceway Woods, 645 N. Western Ave., Carpentersville, according to the nonprofit’s website.
Admission is free, but T-shirts are available for purchase for $15 in advance and $25 at the event. Proceeds will benefit to benefit mental health advocacy efforts.

The second event is an all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, sausage and beverages from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, at the Rakow Adult Activities Center, 665 Barrington Ave.
It’s being hosted by Carpentersville police and fire departments and the Dundee Township Park District.
Breakfast is $5, cash only, payable the day of the event. Proceeds will go to Illinois Firefighter Peer Support and the 100 Club of Illinois.

Hanover Township’s ninth annual ‘Sprint 2 Spring’ 5K steps off May 4
Registration is underway for Hanover Township’s ninth annual “Sprint 2 Spring” 5K run/walk being held at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Hanover Township Izaak Walton Youth Center, 899 Jay St., Elgin.
The race promotes health and wellness in the community and raises funds for the Hanover Township Foundation, which assists low-income residents in obtaining dental and medical services, according to a township news release.
Participants will follow a course through streets of Elgin east of Liberty Street and south of Villa Street. Beverages and snacks will be provided and there will be music, games and a children’s bounce house at the post-race party.
Registration is $35 through Friday, May 3, and $40 on the day of the race.

CASA Kane County hosts inaugural Countryside Clays Sporting Tournament
CASA Kane County will host its inaugural Countryside Clays Sporting Tournament and fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the St. Charles Sportsmen’s Club, 44W471 Keslinger Road, Elburn.
Tickets are $125 per person, according to a news release. That includes a barbecue lunch from Rack Masters; 50 sporting clays targets and ammunition; an event T-shirt; two raffle tickets and an awards reception. Gun rental will not be available.
CASA Kane County is a nonprofit that trains and supervises Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

‘Those Were the Days’ host to talk about old-time radio at St. Charles library
Old-time radio expert Steve Darnall, host of radio’s “Those Were the Days,” will be speak about Chicago’s importance in early radio at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.
“The Windy City on the Air” will focus on how Chicago was a major radio epicenter during the medium’s early years.
In his presentation, Darnall will discuss Chicago’s many groundbreaking contributions to radio, including soap operas, juvenile adventure serials, early morning radio shows and local legends who became national sensations.
