ESO and EYSO concerts this weekend at Hemmens, ECC

The Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra will be presenting concerts this weekend.

Joyce Yang will play Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the ESO at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin. The program also will feature Coleridge-Taylor’s overture to “The Song of Hiawatha” and Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, according to the ESO website.

The Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s first three concerts of the season will be presented Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Blizzard Theater in Building H on the Elgin Community College campus, 1700 Spartan Drive.

The 1:30 p.m. concert will feature pieces by Harold Arland, Benjamin Britten, Edward Elgar, Russell Peck and Ralph Vaughan Williams. The 4:30 p.m. concert will include music by Henri Tomasi, Timothy Hagen, Catherine McMichael, Jessie Montgomery and Antonín Dvořák. The 7 p.m. concert will showcase works from Susan K. Powell, Johann Sebastian Bach and Dmitri Shostakovich.

‘You Can’t Take It With You’ being staged at ECC

Elgin Community College will present the 1937 Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy “You Can’t Take It With You” this Friday through Sunday, Nov. 8-10, and again Friday to Sunday, Nov. 15-17, in the Second Space Theatre in the Arts Center, Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive.

The play focuses on a quirky New York family in which Alice, a tech-savvy dreamer, falls for Tony, the charming banker’s son, according to the ECC website. When her snooty future in-laws crash dinner, chaos erupts, the site said.

Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $12 for students and $14 for the general public. For tickets and more information, go to eccartscenter.org.

Elgin-area Veterans Day events set for Monday and Tuesday

Several Veterans Day events are being held in the Elgin area on Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 11-12, including:

  • Elgin’s ceremony featuring guest speakers and music will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Heritage Ballroom at the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.
  • Dundee Township Park District will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday in the Rakow Adult Activities Center, Carpentersville.
  • Carpentersville will hold a memorial at 11 a.m. Monday in Carpenter Park, 275 Maple Ave.
  • South Elgin will dedicate its new Veterans Plaza outside the Public Safety Center, 50 N. Water St., at 11:15 a.m. Monday.
  • Elgin Community College will host “Thanks for the Memories: A USO Tribute” at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Blizzard Theater, Building H, 1700 Spartan Drive. The show pays tribute to entertainers who sang and danced for the troops during World War II. Tickets are $32 at eccartscenter.org.
