Rock garden dedication for Atrium at Oak Crest’s anniversary
The Atrium at Oak Crest will mark its 120th anniversary by dedicating for a new memorial rock garden at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept.12, at its 204 S. State St. campus in Elgin.
The garden honors people past, present and future who make Oak Crest home, Executive Director Susan Cincinelli said in a news release. Following the dedication, light refreshments will be served and tours conducted.
Established in 1904, nonprofit Oak Crest Residence/Atrium Apartments provides independent living, assisted living, respite stays and memory care, the release said.
Shredding event and food drive being held at Rakow library
A free document shredding event and food drive will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. in the parking lot of the Rakow Branch of the Gail Borden Public Library, 2751 W. Bowes Road, Elgin.
Shred truck staff will unload cars, according to a web post from state Rep. Dan Ugaste, R-Geneva, who is hosting the event. Parking will be available for those who want to watch their documents being shredded.

Open house planned for ECC’s Center for Emergency Services
The Elgin Community College Center for Emergency Services will hold an informational session and community open house Saturday, Sept. 14, at its 815 E. Plank Road campus in Burlington.
Attendees can explore and take photos in a fire engine or police patrol car, view demonstrations of fire, police and paramedic equipment and watch firefighters in training at the burn tower, according to the center’s webpage. Weather permitting, the LifeNet Helicopter will land at noon and be open for tours.
Registration is required to attend the informational session, which will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., but is not necessary for the open house, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Batavia Boardwalk applications can be submitted through Dec. 15
Applications from businesses that want to be a part of the Batavia Boardwalk Shops in 2025 can be submitted through Dec. 15.
The incubator program is overseen by the Batavia MainStreet group and allows small independent businesses to rent spaces at a cluster of tiny shops at the corner of Wilson and River streets in Batavia, a news release said. The shops’ sixth season starts May 9, 2025.
Over the last five seasons, the shops have housed 21 businesses on a seasonal basis that have gone on to open permanent locations, with 10 currently occupying spots in downtown Batavia, officials said.
“We will be holding our first virtual Q&A for interested vendors on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m.,” MainStreet Assistant Director Kristen Desler said in the release. “This is a great opportunity for those considering applying to learn more about the program from Batavia MainStreet directors, former tenants and Boardwalk Committee members, and get business advice from Waubonsee Community College’s Small Business Development Center expert.”

St. Charles library holding program on obtaining military records
The St. Charles Public Library will present “The Nuts and Bolts of Military Records” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12, in the Huntley Community Room at the library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.
Military records can be a valuable resource in personal and genealogical research, event organizers said. During the program, professional genealogist Jenny Warner will discuss what military records are available and how to find, order and read them.

Kane Forest Preserve District offers series for young children
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County’s “Little Saplings” series for 3- to 5-year-olds and their caregivers begins this month.
All sessions will run from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursdays at Creek Bend Nature Center in the LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles. Stories, nature hikes, songs, games and crafts are offered, district officials said.
Programs include “Chippy Chipmunks” on Sept. 19; “V is for Vulture” on Oct. 17; and “The Bears” on Nov. 21.
