U-46 presented with award for its fiscal year 2023-24 budget
School District U-46’s Financial Services department is the recipient of a Meritorious Budget Award for Fiscal Year 2023-24 presented last month by the Association of School Business Officials International.
The achievement was recognized by the U-46 School Board with an “Accent on Achievement” honor.
U-46’s documents were reviewed by a panel of school financial professionals to ensure they meet the organization’s stringent criteria as well as national best practices and standards, a news release said.
“Development of the annual budget book, which is a plan for the upcoming fiscal period, requires not only excellent accounting skills but deep collaboration among all district departments,” the release said. “This marks U-46’s eighth consecutive year of receiving the award, which only 13 other school districts in Illinois earned for the 2023-24 fiscal year.”
History museum program to focus on 80th anniversary of D-Day
Historian Jerry Turnquist will discuss the impact of World War II and the 80th anniversary of D-Day on people in Elgin, the United States and Europe during a brown bag lunch being held from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Elgin History Museum, 360 Park St.
D-Day on June 6, 1944, was the day Allied forces stormed the beaches at Normandy, beginning the liberation of France and turning the tide in the war against the Nazis.
Admission is free to museum members and $5 for guests. It can also be viewed via Zoom.

Prescription drug drop-off event being held Tuesday in South Elgin
State Rep. Dan Ugaste, R-Geneva, is joining forces with the South Elgin Police Department to hold a prescription drug drop-off event from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the South Elgin Police Department, 10 N. Water St.
The free outdoor event will allow residents to remain in their vehicles while safely dropping off unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs, a news release said. Medications should be in a sealed plastic bag if possible.
Items that will be accepted include tablets, capsules, and other solid forms of prescription drugs; patches, vaping devices and cartridges with lithium batteries removed; prescription ointments, pet medications and vitamins.
Liquids, including intravenous solutions; syringes, needles and illegal drugs will not be accepted.

Youth Leadership Academy wins $17,000 grant from state treasurer
The Youth Leadership Academy in Elgin was awarded a $17,000 grant through the Charitable Trust Stabilization Program.
The program, managed by State Treasurer Michael Frerichs’ Office, gave away more than $191,000 in grants to 10 small Illinois nonprofit groups that provide assistance with housing and workforce and economic development programs, a news release said. The 10 groups selected were chosen from among 82 applicants.
Youth Leadership Academy helps students learn the skills needed to thrive in college and in the community, the release said. The group works on conflict resolution, empathy and active listening, making a good first impression, dissecting current events and teamwork, and members participate in leadership training and community service events.
