Elmhurst mansion sells for $4.2M, setting new record

A six-bedroom, 9,815-square-foot mansion in Elmhurst sold June 1 for $4.2 million, setting what easily is a record for the highest-priced home sale in that DuPage County suburb’s history.

Elmhurst’s previous highest-priced sale was a seven-bedroom, 11,108-square-foot mansion in south Elmhurst that traded hands in November 2021 for $3.35 million — fully $850,000 less than the sale price of the mansion that sold in June.

Built in 2007 by Elmhurst homebuilder Tim McKenna of T.E. McKenna Builders, the 15-room French Normandy-style mansion that sold for $4.2 million had not been publicly listed for sale. After buying it for $3.01 million in 2017, the sellers extensively renovated the mansion using Chicago-based Elizabeth Krueger Design.

The mansion has 7 ½ bathrooms, four fireplaces, extensive millwork, 17 exterior French doors, a foyer with a 20-foot ceiling and a custom staircase, a great room with a coffered ceiling and a 4,321-square-foot basement with a full bar, a game room, a theater and a rec room. Outside on the 0.6-acre property are a pool, a spa and a pool house with an outdoor kitchen and a bar.

Real estate agent Tim Schiller, managing partner of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate in Elmhurst, was the listing agent and the buying agent for the mansion when it sold in 2017. Recently, the sellers reached out to Schiller to inform him that they were planning to relocate. So Schiller told Elite Street that he knew of a family in Elmhurst who he thought would love the property.

“Though they were not in the market to purchase a new home, I knew they would love every square inch of it,” Schiller said. “One phone call and one tour (later), they were in. The home wowed me, them, their kids and now everyone they have invited. … (It’s) truly a well-built home by T.E. McKenna, revised for this local Elmhurst family to raise their kids and build their dreams.”

The mansion had a $63,963 property tax bill in the 2022 tax year.
