The FBI’s Chicago office announced a $10,000 reward Thursday for information leading to the arrest of Joseph “Troubles” Matos, an alleged gang member charged in the 2021 drive-by killing of a National Guard member.
An indictment unsealed earlier this month charged Matos and another man, Gary “Gotti” Roberson, with murder in furtherance of racketeering conspiracy. Roberson, 40, of Chicago, was arrested May 16 and is being held without bond.
Both men are believed to be members of the Milwaukee Kings street gang, which is associated with narcotics trafficking and committing acts of violence to acquire perceived territory, according to a statement from the FBI. If convicted, Matos and Roberson could face the death penalty.
On July 3, 2021, Chrys Carvajal, 19, of Portage Park, was fatally shot in the back and abdomen on the 2200 block of North Lockwood Avenue in the Belmont-Cragin neighborhood. He was on leave from basic Army training and was leaving a house party when he was killed, according to his family.
An arrest warrant was issued for Matos on May 14. Two days later, the FBI raided a home where he was believed to be staying on the 2200 block of West Farragut Avenue in Lincoln Square. He was not found there and remains a fugitive.
Matos should be considered armed and dangerous, and members of the public should not approach him directly, the FBI said.
