The Park Ridge Fire Department responded to a house fire on July 17 just after 3 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Washington Avenue, according to a news release.
Seeing smoke coming from the single-family home, the first-arriving firefighters upgraded the alarm to a confirmed fire, which brought additional firefighters to the scene through longstanding mutual aid agreements, the department said.
The homeowners had been alerted by a working smoke alarm and had gotten out of the house, telling firefighters the blaze was in a rear bedroom, according to the release, which said Park Ridge fire crews began a coordinated fire attack while supporting fire crews conducted searches, ventilated the structure and deployed a
second hose line for protection.
Firefighters brought the fire under control while it was contained to the room where it started. No firefighters were injured, per the department; paramedics evaluated one occupant but determined the person did not need to be taken to the hospital.
The Des Plaines, Niles, and Morton Grove Fire Departments and the Rosemont Public Safety Department assisted. Additionally, the Park Ridge fire stations were
staffed by mutual aid crews from the Bensenville, Elk Grove, Schiller Park and Wheeling Fire Departments.
The fire was classified as accidental in nature, and damage to the home is estimated to be $30,000.
The Park Ridge Fire Department said it urges everyone to have multiple working smoke detectors in their homes and businesses and to test them regularly.
