Former Cubs president Theo Epstein sells Lakeview home after purchasing a $12M mansion in Connecticut

Former Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein and his wife, Marie, on Friday sold their six-bedroom, 7,000-square-foot brick and limestone mansion in Lakeview for $3.5 million. The sale follows their purchase last year of an $11.9 million mansion in Greenwich, Conn.

Now a consultant for Major League Baseball, Epstein oversaw the Cubs’ baseball operations from 2011 until stepping down in November 2021. That included leading the team to the 2016 World Series title.

In Lakeview, Epstein and his wife paid $3.25 million in late 2011 for the mansion, which at that time was newly built. They outbid then-Chicago Blackhawks star Patrick Sharp for the mansion.

The Epsteins first listed the mansion in September 2022 for $3.6 million through real estate agents’ private listing network, and the house briefly went under contract. After that deal fell through, the Epsteins and listing agent Jeff Lowe of Compass listed it publicly at a higher, $3.75 million asking price.

The couple then listed the mansion for rent in December 2022 at $19,000 a month and then took it off the market at the end of that month. They relisted it in July at $3.6 million and sold it on Aug. 25 for $3.5 million.

Situated on an extra-wide, 37.5-foot lot, the mansion has five full bathrooms, two half bathrooms, millwork and built-ins throughout, high ceilings, a living room with a custom limestone fireplace, a curved staircase with a skylight above, and a kitchen with a marble island, a walk-in pantry and commercial-grade appliances.

Other features include a great room with high ceilings, a walkout patio and a primary bedroom suite with floor-to-ceiling windows, a fireplace, two walk-in closets, a wet bar and a marble bathroom. The mansion also has a great room, an attached four-car garage with a rooftop deck and a lower level with radiant heat, a theater room and an oversized bar.

Lowe declined to comment on the sale, and public records do not yet identify the buyers’ identities. The mansion had a $46,320 property tax bill in the 2021 tax year.

Meanwhile, in Greenwich, the Epsteins’ new six-bedroom mansion was built in 2020 and has six bathrooms, a white staircase that was inspired by New York’s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, walls of oversized windows and doors, Brazilian Garapa wood siding, Belgian black granite touches, a zinc roof and reclaimed French oak floors. The mansion’s lower level has a 500-square-foot gym, a bar, a wine cellar, a living wall and a billiard room. The 1.79-acre property also has an infinity pool, a pavilion, level lawns, a bridge over a brook and new stone walls.

Joanne Mancuso, who represented the Epsteins in Greenwich, declined to comment on their purchase.
