A three-bedroom, 2,744-square-foot mid-century modern house in unincorporated Glen Ellyn that was designed by noted architect Edward Dart sold on Nov. 17 for $550,000.
Dart, who died in 1975 at age 53, is known for his mid-century modern home designs, which have made something of a comeback in recent years, and for orienting houses he designed in an east-west configuration to take maximum advantage of natural sunlight for heating the homes.
Built in 1961 by homebuilder Graeme Stewart, the house, which is on Red Oak Drive in the Glen Ellyn Woods neighborhood near the Morton Arboretum, has numerous signature elements of Dart-designed homes from that era, including a flat roofline, numerous windows and plenty of exposed brick and wood. It also has three bathrooms, two fireplaces and a kitchen that was updated in 2015 with quartz countertops and stainless steel appliances.
The sellers also remodeled two of the home’s three bathrooms in 2022 and added new doors to the front entrance. Other features include a lower level with a large family room and an office.
“It was a special house built with transoms over most of the exterior walls. That’s characteristic of an Edward Dart house,” listing agent Cindy Voss of RE/MAX Suburban told Elite Street. “And there are windows everywhere — I mean, you stand in that kitchen and you feel like you’re in a treehouse. The back rooms of the house all face south and all have sliding doors to a deck. It’s a fabulous house — they don’t come along like that very often.”
The sellers paid $410,000 for the house in 2013. They listed it in September at $535,000 and went under contract just four days later, selling it for $15,000 above its asking price.
The home had a $9,102 property tax bill in the 2021 tax year.
