The League of Very Ordinary Gentlemen has sponsored 29 children from low-income, Glenview-area families to play after-school baseball, volleyball, flag football, and basketball in 2023-2024, the organization announced.

According to a news release, the youth sports scholarship program started in 2022 and has gained traction in the Glenview community through word of mouth, advertising through the Glenview District 34 school system, and a partnership with Youth Services of Glenview and Northbrook.

“We were very happy to be able to sponsor so many deserving children last year. Some of the kids had never had the opportunity to play an organized team sport before. We hope to be able to help even more kids and families this year,” Mike Fox, LVOG Charitable Director, said in the release.

The League of Very Ordinary Gentlemen is a nonprofit, slow-pitch softball league in Glenview, according to the release. It was started in 2020 as a way for a group of friends to get out of the house and play softball once a week. The LVOG has grown and expanded to become a fixture on the local philanthropic landscape for their fundraising and volunteer efforts in the Glenview community and now boasts over 200 members.

The release said the league now boasts a membership of over 200 local dads, has a host of local sponsors, and, in addition to the youth sports scholarship, organizes an annual LVOG Field Day for the children and families of Youth Services.

To qualify for this youth sports scholarship, families must submit an application and any requested information, according to the release. The children of the families who qualify range in age from 5 to 14 years old, and play their respective sports through Glenview Youth Baseball and the Glenview Park District.

Glenview families interested in applying for the youth sports scholarships should go to lvog.org where they can find an application to download in English or Spanish. The LVOG is currently only accepting applications for the 2024 House League baseball season. If selected, the LVOG helps register the children, pays their entry fee, and any related uniform or equipment costs.
